Apply for a License To Carry

**If you are applying for a renewal of a current LTC or FID please do not submit the application for renewal any sooner than 90 days from expiration**  

License to Carry Requirements:

• You must be at least 21 years of age
• You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien
• You must apply for a resident firearms license to carry or firearms identification card through the police department in the town where you reside.
• You will need to submit:
  • A complete Resident Firearms License Application  https://www.mass.gov/doc/resident-firearms-license-applicationaugust-2026/download Applying on line through the portal is strongly encouraged: https://gunportal.mass.gov/mircsUnifiedPortal/ Your application will not be processed until your fee is submitted to the Police Department. 
  • The required application fee. Check or money order made payable to the Town of Auburn.
  • A Massachusetts Basic Firearms Safety Course certificate
  • A form of identification
• You may need to submit:
  • Proof of residence
• If you are seeking a license to carry for employment purposes, a letter from your employer typed on company letterhead must accompany your application
• All applications must be dropped off with the appropriate fee or the fee must be dropped off after you apply on-line (checks made payable to the Town of Auburn). Once the application is reviewed, new applicants will be contacted to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting.

Firearm Identification Card Requirements:

• You must be 15 years of age and must be accompanied by a legal guardian up until the age of 18.
• You must apply for a resident firearms license to carry or firearms identification card through the police department in the town where you reside. You MUST be a resident of the Town of Auburn.
• You will need to submit:
  • A complete resident firearms license application
  • The required application fee. Check or money order made payable to the Town of Auburn
  • A Massachusetts Basic Firearms Safety Course certificate
  • A form of identification
• You may need to submit:
  • Proof of residence
• You will need to be available to be fingerprinted

Both LTC and FID applications: 

• If you have appeared in court for any criminal offense, or if you were the subject of a 209A Restraining Order, you must obtain and submit copies of police reports, 209A affidavits and court documents.
• You may not have any outstanding warrants against you.
• You may not be the defendant of a current restraining order, suspension or surrender order.
• You must wait five years if you have been treated or confined for drug addiction or alcoholism and submit an affidavit from a registered physician stating that you have been cured.
• Submit an affidavit from a registered physician if you have been confined to a hospital or institution for mental illness. The affidavit must state that that the physician is familiar with your condition and that in their opinion there is no reason why you should not possess a handgun, rifle or shotgun.

** Please pay close attention to the questions in the application and disclose any and all previous charges and previous court involvement. Failure to disclose charges, even ones that were dismissed or are "sealed" may lead you to being found untruthful and denied.  You must disclosed all previous court history, criminal charges, restraining orders etc. **
