Chief R. Scott Mills

Chief R. Scott Mills began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Town of Norwell before joining the Auburn Police Department in 1997. Over the years, he has served in a variety of capacities, building a career marked by dedication, leadership, and commitment to public safety.

After starting in the Patrol Division, Chief Mills became a member of the CEMLEC SWAT Team and later served in the Detective Unit. In 2002, he was promoted to Sergeant, where he supervised patrol shifts and gained valuable experience in police administration. During his eleven years as Sergeant, he oversaw the Communications Division, managed the Property and Evidence Room, supervised firearms licensing under Chief Andrew Sluckis, and developed expertise in grant writing and administration.

In 2013, Chief Mills returned to the Detective Unit as the supervisor, where he led numerous major investigations, including the 2016 murder of Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr. He remained in this role until early 2022, when Chief Todd Lemon promoted him first to Provisional Lieutenant and later that year to become the Department’s first Deputy Chief of Police.

As Deputy Chief, he spearheaded a comprehensive update of departmental policies with a focus on achieving State Accreditation, secured grant funding for the Department’s Body-Worn Camera program, and managed the agency’s fiscal operations, budgets, and internal discipline.

On July 15, 2025, R. Scott Mills was officially promoted to Chief of Police of the Auburn Police Department.

Chief Mills holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English/Communications from North Adams State College and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College. He has also completed the FBI-LEEDA Leadership Program and the New England Institute for Law Enforcement Management.

A Message from Chief Mills:

“As Chief, my priority is to invest in officer safety and wellness through innovative programs and high-quality, realistic training. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community through proactive traffic enforcement, strengthening our partnerships with schools and young people, and maintaining the highest standards of investigative excellence as we work to prevent and solve crimes.”
